National Park Service Collaboration

We have signed a five-year Cooperative Agreement with the National Park Service’s Northeast Museum Services Center. This agreement continues to provide graduate students in the UMass Boston Historical Archaeology M.A. program with the opportunity to learn the NPS Northeast Region’s curation standards for archaeological collections and collections management best practices. During the 2024-2025 school year, graduate assistants will be working on two projects: rehousing archaeological collections from Weir Farm National Historical Park in Wilton, CT, and rehousing the Carns Site Collection, a complex Indigenous site from Cape Cod National Seashore. Both projects present students with unique opportunities to learn to identify material culture spanning thousands of years and to engage with the complexity of archaeological collections curation with two vastly different collections. The work performed by our graduate assistants will contribute to the long-term preservation of NPS archaeological collections ensuring their integrity and stability.
