Leith Smith

Leith Smith is a project archaeologist with the Fiske Center. He came to the Department of Anthropology at UMass Boston in 2001 as the Project Archaeologist for Boston’s Big Dig (Central Artery / Third Harbor Tunnel Project). Leith has been involved in archaeological research and cultural resource management projects in the mid-Atlantic and New England for over 30 years and continues in that focus at UMB. Research interests include archaeology of the African diaspora with a focus on Ghana, West Africa and the Eastern US, historical archaeology, industrial archaeology, and landscape archaeology. He received his MA from the University of South Carolina in 1993 and Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 2008. Leith also works for the Maine Historic Preservation Commission based in Augusta conducting research and cultural resource management projects.
